KINGDOM ANIMALIA
Description: They are eukaryotic organisms which obtain nourishment from other organisms and can respond to various stimuli. Animals are classified into invertebrates (without backbone) and vertebrates (with backbone).
Divergent Event: Animals evolved from opisthokonts, organisms that started as single celled spores and propelled themselves with a single posterior flagellum.
Body Plan: Multicellular; complex eukaryotic cells.
Metabolism: Heterotrophic; generally digesting food in an internal chamber.
Digestion: Extracellular - Gastrovascular - Complete
Nervous: Nervenet, ring, ganglia, brain - controls the movement and behaviors of animals.
Circulatory: Closed (blood never leaves the system of blood vessels)and open. Hearts can vary from 2 chmabers to 5 chambers.
Respiratory: lungs (humans), gills (fish), book lungs (spiders) - aerobic respiration.
Reproduction: Sexual (meiosis produces genetically-diverse gametes), with a few exceptions such as the all-female Whiptail species of lizards.
Examples:
1. Chipmunk - Eutamias
2. Chimpanzee - Pan Troglodytes
3. Sea Turtle - Chelonia Mydas
